Driver Categories

  • Critical habitat/habitat use (spatial and temporal)
    • Identifying hot spot areas and critical habitats, high value ecosystems, and regional connectivity amongst these areas.
    • Understanding of seasonal and annual home ranges or migratory corridors to assess threats
  • Real-time Monitoring –
    • real-time monitoring of areas/MPAS occupied by animals can be used for enforcement of fisheries and environmental regulations
    • key sentinel species as early indicators of climate or
    • environmental change
    • indicator species for high seas fisheries monitoring
  • Effects of Disturbance (baseline behavior and ecology; response studies)
    • Understanding and managing human activities and anthropogenic disturbances
    • avoiding deleterious activities by determining operational windows for construction, dredging, pile driving, shipping and military activities
    • evaluating how marine species use sites that might be disturbed in the future by human activities such as aquaculture, OTEC and wind farm energy, the military,
    • shipping, sewage treatment facilities, water withdrawals, and marina development
  • Marine resource (fisheries) management / Protected species management (ESA, MMPA, Magnuson-Fisheries)
    • Informing and improving population censuses
    • Improving stock assessment activities
    • Understanding of seasonal and annual home ranges or migratory corridors to assess threats
    • Defining unit stocks for management.
    • Aiding in marine spatial planning and design of Marine Protected Areas.
    • Additionally, combining information from many species provides information necessary for Ecosystem-Based Management.
  • Improve Ocean models/forecasting
    • pack ice
    • Informing hurricane intensity forecasts.
    • Sampling at fronts and eddies.
    • Coastal ocean dynamics.
    • offshore and pelagic waters of the US EEZ
    • International seas

The Animal Telemetry Network Task Team (ATN TT) has the following goals:

  • Facilitate the adoption of the ATN Strategic Plan and Recomendations.
  • Develop a full Implementation Plan in coordination with the IOOC and with IOOS federal agencies, as well as with relevant non-federal partners.

Priority Objectives

The ATN TT has the following priority objectives:

  • Distribute adn socialize the “Strategic Plan and Recommendations for an Animal Telemetry Network (ATN) through U.S. IOOS”
  • Develop an “ATN Implementation Plan”
  • Convene a 3rd ATN Steering Committee Workshop

Additional Action Items

In addition to the listed priorities and actions, the ATN TT will engage in the following action items:

  • Domonstration Projects involving teh U.S. IOOS Program Office, ONR Marine Mammal & Biology (MMB) program, and NAVOCEANO
    • Data Interoperability Tools (2011‐12) – U.S. IOOS PO &
ONR co‐sponsored a collaboration with the TOPP
program at Stanford Univ., NAVOCEANO, NOAA NCEP
    • Metadata Standards for Acoustic Tags (2012‐13) – U.S.
      IOOS sponsored
  • Engage in the development of a Data Assembly Center (ATN DAC) (2013-14) – U.S. IOOS PO & Navy (NAVOCEANO & ONR) Co-sponsored
