Ocean Sciences Meeting 2012

The Ocean.US Workshop Proceedings in 2002 set the stage for nation’s first Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). Ten years later, IOOS has evolved significantly to meet the nation’s ocean observing needs. Although experts provided guidance for implementation, several factors influenced the subsequent development of IOOS over the ensuing decade. Major changes in congressional and executive branch leadership, new research and technologies, a challenging economic and federal funding environment, and diverse institutional mandates have all influenced both the growth and implementation of IOOS.
The Interagency Ocean Observation Committee (IOOC) is bringing together ocean observers, researchers, and data managers to discuss how to shape the next decade of ocean observing. IOOS will hold a large-scale summit in the fall of 2012 that will assess and build on the original Ocean.US workshop.
This town hall is an opportunity for Ocean Sciences Meeting 2012 attendees to influence the outcomes of the summit through providing input to the 2012 Summit organizers. Several IOOC/IOOS leaders will seek audience input through facilitated discussions, panels, and presentations. Most importantly, they will be looking to Ocean Sciences ‘12 attendees for suggestions on enhancing marine research, operations, and funding. Also, complementary flash drives containing these documents will be made available to attendees during the town hall.
